Herbology:Plants that are used as medicines have been referred to as herbs for over 4000 years by European and the Mediterranean cultures, hence the word herb, being a derivation of herbe and the Latin word, herba. Herbology is the study of herbs and plants that aid in curing illnesses and preventing disease. Although herbs may prevent or correct many medical conditions, they are treated as a food and/or food supplement, rather than as a medication.
There are several types of herbal medicine systems that are used today; European, Native American, Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Western herbalism are the most prevalent systems. Because of the large number of types of herbal medicine there is also a large number in ways to classify these herbs.
Many botanical plants contain vitamins, minerals and trace minerals. The body can usually digest vitamins and minerals much easier through plant origin than from those of fish or animal origin. Therefore, herbs are an excellent source to impart the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to maintain proper health.
The main benefits of herbs and herbal remedies are cleansing, herbs help cleanse and purify the body without harmful side effects, normalizes bodily functions, herbs regulate and tone the glands to function normally, nutritional value, herbs are high in vitamins and minerals, raises energy levels, allows body to have extra energy to heal itself, and stimulates the body's immune system, promotes the body's natural good bacteria.
Herbs are natural remedies and the natural medicines of the time when people relied and lived off of the earth for everything. Today nearly 50% of the thousands of drug companies commonly used and prescribed are either derived from a plant source or contain a chemical imitation of a plant compound.
